Iron Sharpens Iron: Living Beyond the Highlight Reel

Iron Sharpens Iron: Living Beyond the Highlight Reel

There’s a verse that’s been circling in my head: “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” (Proverbs 27:17).

It makes me ask myself: How can I be of service to others? How can my story help somebody else? And maybe the hardest — how can I get over myself enough to share it?

We’re living in a time where so much feels fake. What we see online is polished, filtered, and lit just right. And behind those highlight reels, people are hurting, comparing, and believing their life doesn’t measure up.

But life is not a highlight reel. Life is the messy middle, the ordinary moments, the unpolished truth. Washing dishes isn’t glamorous, but it means you had food to eat. Folding laundry might not go viral, but it means you have clothes to wear and a family to care for. These “boring” moments are actually the fabric of a beautiful life.

When we hide the messy parts and only display the curated bits, we do each other a disservice. We weren’t meant to compete with one another — we were meant to sharpen one another. Growth doesn’t happen in pretense; it happens when we’re raw, open, and willing to be sharpened by the people beside us.

Maybe that means I’ll share a little bit of everything. Some days it might be gardening. Other days baking, faith, personal growth, or struggles. That’s life. It doesn’t fit in a niche or a box.

And my hope is that in sharing — both joys and downfalls — I can pass on a lesson or two. Or maybe you’ll see something I’m walking through and share your wisdom with me. Because we were designed to sharpen each other, not tear each other down.

At the end of the day, isn’t the goal that when we stand before God, He can say, “You used everything I gave you. Thank you.” That’s the life I want to live — one of love, grace, growth, and service.

So embrace the messy side of yourself. Sharpen your edges. Use every talent. Learn, grow, and love. You are worthy. You are loved. And life is so sweet.
